NCAD Degree Show 2011

The end is nearly upon us. After four years nestled in the unassuming, hidden world of NCAD on Thomas Street, after enduring core then feeling so at home for the three following years down in the basement surrounded by crazy but amazing people in the Industrial Design department, after countless projects, 1000s of hours waiting for renders to finish, even more hours spent literally logged into the matrix that is solidworks modelling, after many lunchtimes filled with chicken fillet rolls, after countless deadlines and ridiculous amounts of sanding, after inhaling probably too many vapours from spray paints, glues, markers, lacquers, cibatool dust, blue foam dust, and probably countless others, after many tutorials,  a lot of cups of coffee, four rag weeks, many other nights of crazy NCAD madness, about 25 balls, and tons of friends and so much other stuff that I can’t even think about, we are nearly finished our degrees, mine and my class a Bdes in Industrial Design.

After that short overview… I am inviting you to come and see our Degree Show. This is essentially a big exhibition of all of the final year students work, from us in Industrial Design, but also all the other departments, Viscom, Fashion Design, Media, Painting, Ceramics, Glass, Metals – Jewellery, Sculpture, Print, Education, and Textiles. So it’s worth coming along and having a look around, there will definitely be something to interest everyone.

Now I gotta go work on something important for my project.

See you there.

NCAD Degree Show 2011

Nearing the end

This was my desk in college this morning. A quick snap on my phone. Just back after Easter and everyone is realising the reality of only a few weeks left to finish everything needed for the degree show. I’m gonna be pretty busy but I’ll have some exciting stuff to show on here after. WATCH THIS SPACE!

MY EDC – An everyday bag of an industrial designer

EDC

Recently stumbled across this blog EVERYDAYCARRY … (when i say stumbled across, I didn’t actually STUMBLE across it, I think I was actually reading ZITE at the time (which is awesome by the way) and there was a featured post from EDC there). Anyway, browsed through this blog a bit, noticing everyones attraction to knives and guns… but ignoring that over compensation it was very interesting to see the things that people carry on a day to day basis and what they consider preparedness. Especially as an industrial designer this was interesting. Anything to do with people’s habits and things that people do with products and what products they use interests me. But anyway, I realised I was quite similar in terms of preparedness as people on this blog. I have previously done a “What’s in my bag” before, a while ago… here. Thought i’d do a new one, going along the theme of EDC and thinking about the posts on EDC where most people post only things they carry in their pockets or on their person. I have divided the image up and have a section of on my person and then the rest in the bag. I had the camera set up  so i shot a quick video of assembling everything into a nice neat order. Maybe you should do one of these pictures too, it’s always interesting to empty out your bag and see whats hiding.

Boyle to Dublin REALLY FAST

Traveling back up to Dublin decided to shoot a timelapse on the way up. Have been wanting to do one of these for a while and now the evenings have more light I decided to try one out. It was a lovely evening and great conditions for driving. You should watch this big.

Timelapse shot on a D7000 over the course of a 2.75hrs journey from Boyle in Ireland to Dublin. The camera was mounted on a tripod in the back of the car with two of the legs splayed and wedged into the footwells on each side of the car. the third leg was wedged against the back seat pushing the tripod against the two front seats. It was very secure. Half way there I actually stopped and got out to change the card thinking it was full, it actually stopped shooting for some reason. Then I realised there was a second 8gig card in the camera, so I just set it going again.

The camera was set to take a shot every 5 seconds and it was on auto iso and auto everything really as I knew it was going to get dark and I wanted the camera to compensate. Worked out pretty well I think.

Pfizer project completed… The Kug launched

After what seemed like a very short 8 weeks we came to the final presentation of our project in collaboration with Pfizer and Arthritis Ireland. We presented out final designs to members of staff from each organisation along with NCAD staff and our products were briefly on display in NCAD. We made two presentations each, one to camera which will be passed on for judging later in the month and one to the others present. The results of the judging will take place in April along with the launch of Arthritis Irelands ‘Easy to Use’ guidelines. Below are some pictures from the event and of our Kug display. Check out The Kug at www.thekug.com to see pictures, read details and view the ad.

Remastered Encise

In 2007 I designed this car for the Peugeot-Concours-Design Competition. I decided now that it needed a bit of  a going over as the results of 2007, although they looked quite good at the time now appear very dated. This then is the remastered and re-rendered version. I have more images to follow but they will appear here on my flickr page.
